House and Senate leaders posthumously awarded the Congressional Gold Medal to Martin Luther King, Jr., and Coretta Scott King at a ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The Congressional Gold Medal represents Congress' highest expression of national appreciation for distinguished achievements and contributions. National Museum of African American History Director Lonnie Bunch, III, accepted the medal for the Smithsonian. The ceremony included prayers, the U.S. Armed Forces Color Guard, and the U.S. Army Chorus. close
