Historian and journalist Marc Leepson took Book TV on a tour of several National Battlefield Park locations in Maryland and Washington, D.C. During the tour he told the story of the 1864 battle that could have led to the capture of the U.S. Capitol by a Confederate army led by General Jubal Early. On July 11 and 12, 1864, President Lincoln observed the battle and was nearly shot by a confederate sharpshooter.
