The House Judiciary Committee Over-Criminaliztion Task Force held a hearing on the growing number of new federal crimes and Congress' enactment of new criminal statutes. The witnesses focuses on ways to simplify the federal justice system. According to a Congressional Research Service report, 403 new criminal statutes were created by Congress from 2008 to 2013, totaling nearly 5,000 federal statutes carrying criminal penalties. close
