Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin talked about Ukraine’s conflict with Russia and efforts to strengthen international support for Ukraine. He talked about the violence in Eastern Ukraine, the Russian-backed militants and their influence in the region, and the need for increased sanctions against Russia. He said that Russian military forces were increasingly involved in the conflict, including shelling Ukraine’s military from behind the Russian border, and violating Ukraine’s airspace. He called for a ceasefire to allow for an independent investigation of the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight 17. He also called for international support for reforms within Ukraine and financial assistance to help rebuild the country’s economy. close
