Peggy Rolloff talked about former St. Paul, Minnesota, resident and railroad tycoon James J. Hill and his home. Mr. Hill made a fortune building the Great Northern Railroad, and his home reflected his success. Mr. Hill arrived in St. Paul in 1856, and within ten years he owned his own freight and storage business. By 1878, he and four partners had acquired the bankrupt St. Paul and Pacific Railroad Company, and at the time of his death in 1916, his net worth had grown to $63 million.

C-SPAN’s Local Content Vehicles (LCVs) made a stop in their “2014 LCV Cities Tour” in St. Paul, Minnesota, from July 21-24 to feature the history and literary life of the community. Working with the Comcast Cable local affiliate, they visited literary and historic sites where local historians, authors, and civic leaders were interviewed. The history segments air on American History TV (AHTV) on C-SPAN3 and the literary events/non-fiction author segments air on BookTV on C-SPAN2. close
