John Bodnar talks about the idea of “sexual freedom” in the 1950s and the beginning of dissent against Cold War-era moral values. Professor Bodnar talked about how American in the 1950s was portrayed as a morally righteous nation, and how virtue was seen as an integral part of patriotism. He cited the publication of the Kinsey reports on male and female sexuality, the creation of Playboy, and the development of the birth control pill as factors that promoted a revolt against prevailing cultural norms. close
