President Obama awarded the Medal of Honor to two Vietnam War soldiers, Army Command Sergeant Major Bennie Adkins and Army Specialist Four Donald Sloat. Specialist Sloat received the award posthumously for his actions while serving as a machine gunner. Dr. William Sloat accepted on his brother’s behalf. Sergeant Major was given the award for actions taken as an intelligence sergeant. The president in his remarks recounted their combat actions and heroics. He emphasized the importance of honoring Vietnam veterans for their sacrifices, saying they have not always gotten the thanks they deserve. close
