The committee heard testimony from Secy. Martin on the effects of the recently completed North American Free Trade Agreement on American labor. Under questioning from Democratic members of the committee, Secy. Martin said the trade pact, which would lower trade barriers between the U.S., Mexico, and Canada, could cost the U.S. up to 150,000 jobs. She also said the administration was planning to spend up to $750 million a year if necessary to aid workers who had lost their jobs due to the agreement. close
