Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel and Deputy Secretary of Defense Bob Work briefed reporters following the release of the Military Health System review. Secretary Hagel ordered the review in the wake of revelations of health care treatment delays at Veterans Affairs (VA) hospitals, and the deputy secretary led the review. Among the directives the secretary announced at the briefing were improved access to medical treatment and health care quality at underperforming VA hospitals and clinics. Secretary Hagel said the military hospitals and clinics were “comparable” to private sector facilities but that there were also gaps of which he declared, “We cannot accept average.” close
