Spencer Penrose and Colorado Springs

Thayer Tutt talked about Spencer Penrose, who, along with William Jackson Palmer, is credited with the early growth of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Mr. Penrose’s vision for Colorado Springs was vastly different from that of Mr. Palmer’s. While Mr. Palmer wanted to create industry, Mr. Penrose was seen as an idealist. He wanted to give tourists a reason to play in Colorado Springs instead of work. He’s credited with building many of the prominent landmarks in Colorado Springs, and established the El Pomar Foundation, which gives money to those in need of food, clothing, and shelter.

C-SPAN’s Local Content Vehicles (LCVs) made a stop in their “2014 LCV Cities Tour” in Colorado Springs, Colorado, from September 11-17 to feature the history and literary life of the community. Working with the Comcast cable local affiliate, they visited literary and historic sites where local historians, authors, and civic leaders were interviewed. close
