C-SPAN’s Local Content Vehicles (LCVs) made a stop in their “2014 LCV Cities Tour” in Madison, Wisconsin, from September 19-23 to feature the history and literary life of the community. Michael Edmonds talked about Senator William Proxmire and shared personal stories told by Proxmire’s family and former co-workers. Mr. Edmonds also showed some of the papers of the Senator, who created the Golden Fleece Awards and pushed for a treaty decrying genocide. William Proxmire was elected to the Senate in 1957, filling the seat left vacant by Joseph McCarthy. During his career, Senator Proxmire fought against wasteful government spending by awarding what he called his Golden Fleece Awards. Proxmire also urged Congress to ratify what became known as the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the crime of Genocide.
