Each year, Time magazine selects the person who had the most influence on events during the preceding 12 months. Five historians were asked who they believed Time would have selected as the Person of the Year in 1865.

In this segment, Cassandra Newby-Alexander presented her argument for the freed blacks and responded to questions from members of the audience.
