Prime Minister Tony Abbott spoke about Australia’s national security and counterterrorism strategies. The prime minister announced new security reforms in the wake of the Sydney hostage situation in December 2014. His speech to the nation came one day after he released a joint report on the hostage crisis. Prime Minister Abbott said that the government would seek to revoke the citizenship or curb the rights of Australians involved in terrorism and tighten immigration, visa, and hate speech laws. He also announced he would appoint a new counterterrorism chief to tackle the rising threats. He spoke at the Australian Federal Police Headquarters in Canberra.
