The subcommittee heard testimony from the head of the Environmental Protection Agency William Reilly and representatives of environmental organizations on the recently completed North American Free Trade Agreement. Opponents of the free trade agreement have voiced concern over the lack of provisions guaranteeing the protection of the environment in the legislation, and claim American companies will locate plants in Mexico to avoid more stringent environmental regulations in the U.S. Mr. Reilly defended the agreement’s environmental initiatives, and discussed the provisions in the treaty that set up environmental safeguards for industry in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. close
