The Kansas-Nebraska Act, which was seen by Northerners as a pro-Southern act, was passed in 1854 and led to a rush of Northern settlers in the Kansas Territory. Many people in Missouri, who believed that the Kansas Territory should be theirs, saw this as an act of war. This led to a series of raids and ambushes that earned Kansas the name “Bleeding Kansas.”
C-SPAN’s Local Content Vehicles (LCVs) made a stop in their “2015 LCV Cities Tour” in Topeka, Kansas, from April 5-9 to feature the history and literary life of the community. Working with the Cox Communications local affiliate, they visited literary and historic sites where local historians, authors, and civic leaders were interviewed.
