President Obama and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held a joint news conference following a meeting in the Oval Office. They talked about the U.S.-Japan partnership and trade relations. The president also responded to questions about the protests and riots in Baltimore following the death of a black man in police custody. He called the riots “counterproductive” and a distraction from what had been a peaceful protest earlier. President Obama said that the conversation needed to be shifted to the role of police and impoverished communities and not just be in reaction to unfortunate incidents. close
