Attorney General Loretta Lynch testified on the Justice Department’s fiscal year 2016 budget request. This was her first appearance before Congress since her confirmation as attorney general. Her budget priorities included investments in national security, civil rights, protecting vulnerable populations, and Smart on Crime initiatives. Other topics addressed included a possible Justice Department investigation into Baltimore police practices, reforming federal sentencing guidelines, prison overcrowding, increased funding for tribal law enforcement, and that day’s court ruling against the National Security Agency’s program that collects Americans' telephone records. close
