A ceremony was held at the National World War II Memorial commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Allied Forces Victory in the Pacific and the effective end of World War II. The Empire of Japan formally surrendered during a ceremony aboard the USS Missouri September 2, 1945. President Harry Truman declared September 2nd as V-J Day stating, “This is a victory of more than arms alone. This is a victory of liberty over tyranny.” He asked Americans to “set aside V-J Day as one of renewed consecration to the principles which have made us the strongest nation on earth and which, in this war, we have striven so mightily to preserve.”

The ceremony included a color guard, the national anthem played by the U.S. Navy Ceremonial Band, an invocation, and remarks by dignitaries. close
