Professor Robert Paulett talked about Caribbean sugar and its role in the development of Britain’s Atlantic colonies, especially in regards to ideas of race and slavery in the 1600s. He focuses on the island of Barbados and argues that the rise of race-based slavery was driven by the desire for economic profits. Because the island was dedicated almost solely to sugar production, inhabitants had to rely on other colonies for necessities such as food and wood. close
