The Economic Policy Institute held a conference on the role of parental school choice in education reform proposals. The issue revolves around proposals to allow parents to select the public or private school they desire their child to attend. A proposal from President Bush would give parents an education voucher that would go toward the cost of education in a private or a public school. Schools would then have to compete for students, resulting in the improvement of public education through the market system. Panel members analyzed these and other education reform proposals. Members of the panel responded to questions from members of the audience following their prepared remarks. close
