The panelists discussed the role the news media plays in both public opinion and politics and whether the influence of news media shapes the national debate. Stephen Hess, Senior Fellow, Brookings Institute, discussed the differences between the Press and the Media. He liked the increased exposure of candidates with cable news and other media but compared the differences between journalists and talk show hosts who report journalism. Richard Noyes, Director, Center for Media and Public Affairs, noted the change in TV coverage since the 1988 campaign and how the networks were taking more control from the candidates as to how they cover the races. close
