Members of the Senate debated an amendment of the Family and Medical Leave Bill that would provide greater flexibility for employers covered under the legislation. The legislation originally would mandate that all employers with 50 or more employees provide up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave for employees with newborn children or sick family members. The amendment would allow employees to select the family leave option as one of a number of incentives in a “cafeteria plan” of employment options at the outset of their employment. close
