The House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime heard testimonies on the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act, which would seek to prohibit the practice by opponents of abortion from preventing pregnant women from entering clinics. The opponents of abortion defend the practice as a form of nonviolent protest borrowed from civil rights activism of the mid-20th century, while abortion rights supporters claim the practice violates the civil rights of clinic patients. Witnesses to the hearing included the son of a Florida abortion clinic physician who was slain earlier in the year by an anti-abortion protester. The Access to Clinic Entrances Act was co-sponsored by Representative Charles Schumer, (D) New York. close
