Three criminal justice experts talked about incarceration practices in the United States, in particular the dramatic increase in the prison population in recent decades and the role non-violent drug offenses played in that increase.

“Why We Incarcerate” was part of the day-long event, “Race and Justice in America: An Atlantic Summit,” held in the Lincoln Theatre in Washington, D.C. It was inspired by the October 2015 cover story, “The Black Family in the Age of Mass Incarceration,” by Ta-Nehisi Coates. close
