On November 9, 1965, around 5:30 pm Eastern Time, the lights went out over much of the Northeastern United States and parts of Canada. This program contains portions of President Johnson’s phone calls on the night of the massive power outage. You’ll hear LBJ talk to his press secretary Bill Moyers and other advisers and New York City Mayor Robert Wagner, as they try to deal with the magnitude of the outage and learn its cause.

We talk about that outage and the state of the electric grid with physicist Phillip Schewe from the Joint Quantum Institute at the University of Maryland, author of “The Grid.” close
