Dennis Frye talked about the reactions of both Southerners and Northerners following abolitionist John Brown’s 1859 raid on the federal armory at Harpers Ferry and his resulting execution. By using quotes from period newspapers and letters, Mr. Frye set the stage for the nation’s divided sentiments heading into the election of 1860, which was won by Abraham Lincoln.

“Did John Brown Elect Abraham Lincoln?” was part of the annual Christmas in Shepherdstown celebration that had a three-day Civil War theme for the first time, presented through a partnership between the Shepherd history department, the Shepherd University foundation and the George Tyler Moore Center for the study of the Civil War. The event was held at the Robert C. Byrd Center for Legislative Studies. close
