The subcommittee heard from the heads of the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms on the recent events near Waco, Texas. In late February 1993, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms assaulted the compound of an armed religious cult near Waco to arrest the cult’s leader on federal firearms statute violations. The cult repulsed the raid with gunfire, and lay under siege from government agents for 51 days. On April 19, the cult’s compound burned to the ground after the FBI began to pressure cult members to surrender with the use of tear gas. Mr. Sessions, Mr. Higgins and other representatives of the agencies testified on the government’s decision making processes that led to the original raid as well as the pressure tactics on the cult’s final day. close
