Professor Roger Grant talked about the history of American transportation and the rise of interurban electric rail at the end of the 19th century and early 20th century. Interurbans were similar to rural trolleys and connected cities via small electric train cars. Before the rise of the personal automobile, these local systems allowed people from rural areas to get to city centers in a cheap, reliable way. He talks about interurbans as a precursors to the urban light rail of today. close
