The committee heard testimony from attorneys in a hearing on a motion from a group of Oregonians challenging the 1992 election of Senator Bob Packwood of Oregon. Shortly after the election, newspaper reports carried the accounts of several female former staffers of Senator Packwood who claimed he sexually harassed them at times during his political career. The citizens behind the motion to unseat Senator Packwood claim the election should be nullified because Senator Packwood lied to the media prior to the election about the investigation into reports of sexual harassment, thus denying voters relevant information concerning the election. The motion also claims Senator Packwood attempted to quell the harassment charges by spreading rumors about the backgrounds of the harassment victims. In the hearing, attorneys for the Oregon citizens' group and Senator Packwood responded to questions concerning the motion. close
