Alan Rothschild showed images of his collection of patent models and talked about the book he and his wife co-authored, Inventing a Better Mousetrap: 200 Years of American History in the Amazing World of Patent Models. The U.S. Patent Act of 1790 required that anyone applying for a patent must submit a model of their invention. Over 200,000 models were submitted before the requirement was abolished in 1890. Since 1994, inventor Alan Rothschild and his wife Ann have collected over 4,000 patent models, including inventions such as the 1871 Breech-Loading firearm, and the 1879 carburetor. close
