The Supreme Court heard oral argument in United States v. Texas, docket number 15-674, a case concerning President Obama’s executive actions on immigration. In November 2014 President Obama initiated Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA), which defers deportation of undocumented immigrants whose children are U.S. citizens or legal residents. He also expanded the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Texas and 25 other states challenged the executive actions as unconstitutional and a violation of federal law governing how agencies can make regulations.

On June 23, 2016, the court reached a 4-4 split decision, thus leaving in place a lower court’s ruling that blocks the implementation DAPA and DACA. close
