Alvin Townley spoke by phone about a May 2, 1966, interview inside a Hanoi prison with Vietnam War prisoner of war and Navy aviator Jeremiah Denton. During the interview, then-Commander Denton blinked the word “torture” in Morse code. Mr. Townley is the author of Defiant: The POWs Who Endured Vietnam’s Most Infamous Prison, the Women Who Fought for Them, and the One Who Never Returned.

Following Mr. Townley’s remarks, the three-minute interview with Jeremiah Denton, conducted by a Japanese reporter, was shown. close
