The bulk of Senator Simpson’s speech concerns problems that confront government officials when they face the media. He stresses that officials are often limited in their defense. Overall, he asserts that the mass media has an awesome power in the United States. Simpson uses many examples of how the media may manipulate news to help or harm officials. In his introduction to the senator, Professor Kalb speaks on some of the debated issues in relation to the topic of the media and campaigns. These include tracking polls and the battle of a free media and a paid media. A question and answer session follows Senator Simpson’s speech. close
