The subcommittee heard testimony from the Librarian of Congress, attorneys, and respresentatives of academic groups on the recent release of the private papers of the late Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall to the public. After the release was announced to the media, several current Supreme Court justices criticized the action, and threatened to prevent the Library of Congress from attaining their papers following their deaths. Issues brought up in the hearing included the current procedures for handling the papers of late Supreme Court justices, and the decision making processes that went in to releasing Justice Marshall’s papers earlier in the year. close
