The subcommittee heard testimony on the 1972 Clean Water Act, which was intended to make the nation’s waters fishable and swimmable by 1984, and eliminate sewage release in the nation’s waters by 1985. Ms. Browner discussed the goals of the EPA in cleaning up the nation’s water supply, the effectiveness of further funding for the Clean Water Act, and proposals to save money in the federal budget by cutting funding for the creation of sewage treatment plants in western states. close
