Members of environmental protection organizations talked with reporters on their concern about the White House forestry policy announced by President Clinton earlier in the week. The new policy sought to determine a compromise between the need for timber of the logging industry and the concern for the environment in the Pacific Northwest by allowing limited logging rights in ancient forests while preserving land for ancient forests and wildlife habitats. The environmentalists objected to the policy’s lack of absolute bans on timber harvests in any parts of ancient forests, and the policy’s dependence on new forestry techniques. close
