Senator Chris Coons (D-DE) spoke to reporters following a closed-door briefing on Syria with Defense Secretary James Mattis and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair General Joseph Dunford. He said, “The only thing worse than a bad plan on Syria is no plan on Syria, and the president and his administration have failed to deliver a coherent plan on the path forward.” The senator said he thinks it is important to remain engaged in Syria and to pursue a diplomatic resolution or else the U.S. will lose its leverage in Syria. Senator Coons also reacted to news that Senator McConnell (R-KY) said he would not bring legislation to the floor to block President Trump from firing Special Counsel Robert Mueller. “I don’t know where Leader McConnell gets his confidence that President Trump will not take action to interfere with this investigation,” said Senator Coons. He added that he hoped Mr. McConnell was right, but that he would continue to push for the legislation through the Judiciary Committee. close
