Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and House Homeland Security Committee Chair Michael McCaul (R-TX) spoke to reporters following a briefing of House members on efforts to stop foreign governments from interfering in U.S. elections. Secretary Nielsen answered questions about the Trump administration’s response to Russia’s meddling in the 2016 presidential election, and also said she was “not aware” of the intelligence community’s specific conclusion that Russia interfered in support of Donald Trump. Representative McCaul speculated as to why so few House members came to the briefing--only about 40 of 441 attended. Later, a spokesman for the secretary clarified that Ms. Nielsen had seen the intelligence community’s assessment on Russian interference and agreed with it. close
