Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) spoke about his resolution to disapprove of the Treasury Department’s relaxation of sanctions on three companies owned by Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska, who Senator Schumer says has close ties to Vladimir Putin, organized crime, and Paul Manafort. He said the sanctions should not be lifted before special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation is complete.

Of Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s (R-KY) statement that the resolution was a “political stunt,” Senator Schumer said, “That’s appalling, after all Putin has done.” He says he had to bring it up then because the law that allowed for the resolution of disapproval has a 30-day time limit that was set to expired two days later, on January 17, 2019. close
