In an excerpt from the session of the U.S. Senate, senators debated the nomination of former University of Pennsylvania President Sheldon Hackney to head the National Endowment for the Humanities. Opponents of his nomination cited several incidents concerning racial issues on the University of Pennsylvania campus in which they claimed Mr. Hackney had not adequately defended students' right to free speech. Mr. Hackney’s nomination was confirmed by the Senate the previous day. close
