Senate and House Republicans spoke in a news conference to criticize the president’s economic program released by a House and Senate conference committee earlier in the week. The speakers criticized the increased taxes in the program, including the tax on gasoline, and said the plan would not lead to decreased deficits after 1998. The House and Senate were expected to vote on the plan later in the week. close
