Joshua Greenberg discussed his book, Bank Notes and Shinplasters: The Rage for Paper Money in the Early Republic, which examines the design and use of paper money in the antebellum era. He explained that before the federal government began to regularly issue a national paper currency during the Civil War, Americans navigated a vast and complex system of bank and business-produced notes. The Massachusetts Historical Society hosted this event and provided the video. close
