The U.S. Senate met and continued debate on S.1607 or the Crime Bill. The Senate voted on a number of amendments to the bill including, the Lieberman amendment which made carjacking a federal crime which could carry the death penalty, the Kohl amendment which made illegal the private transfer of a firearm to a minor, and the Roth amendment which made mandatory the reporting of immigration status of those arrested by local law enforcement to federal immigration authorities. The Senate also voted on an appropriations bill for the Department of the Interior. The Senate then stood in recess until 2:15 pm the same day. close
