Following an introduction by Defense Secretary Aspin, Vice President Gore delivered a foreign policy speech before an audience at the Pabst Theater in Milwaukee. His statements concerned the president’s four stated foreign policy goals for his trip to Europe. The vice president cited the president’s feelings about the importance of United States support for new democracies emerging around the world. He stated that the president’s European foreign policy trip goals are to: 1) reinvigorate NATO by proposing that NATO create a Partnership for Peace as a major step toward the new security Europe needs, 2) show support for those people and leaders in former Communist states working to build democracy, and to lay the building blocks of a civil society, 3) help reduce the dangers of weapons of mass destruction, 4) and support the dramatic progress toward market reforms throughout the former communist states and to work for a greater Europe that is more economically vibrant. close
