President Clinton briefed the media on his economic report. The President indicated that the American economy is on the path to renewal, and that we now have the “best conditions” in 20-30 years for long-term sustained economic growth. The President cited the commitment to deficit reduction, the passage of NAFTA, and completion of the GATT agreement as reasons for the economic recovery. To sustain economic growth, the Administration will focus on further deficit reduction, investment in dual-use defense and new environmental technologies, the creation of the national information infrastructure, and health care and welfare reform. Media questions focused on possible U.S. trade sanctions against Japan. close
