Associate Justice David Souter introduced University of Virginia Law Professor Edward White, who examined the work of the Supreme Court during Salmon Chase’s term as Chief Justice from 1864 to 1873. This work included amendments thirteen through fifteen, the so-called “Civil War amendments.” He also described the influence of Chase’s personality on this period of Supreme Court history. This was the third in a lecture series entitled, “The Supreme Court in the Civil War.” close
