Members of Congress joined by representatives of several women’s organizations at a news conference, called on President Clinton to name an African-American woman to the Supreme Court vacancy created by the retirement of Justice Harry Blackmun. Among those participating were Patricia Ireland of the National Organization for Women, Molly Yard of Feminist Majority and Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA). At the time, there are seven men and two women on the court. close
