William Gray, White House special Advisor on Haiti, met with reporters about the situation in Haiti. Mr. Gray discussed the current refugee situation, and U.S. efforts to seek cooperation from Caribbean nations to process Haitians. The White House confirmed that day that the the U.S. military base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba had been opened to handle the overflow of Haitians seeking refugee status. Earlier in the week, nearly 1,500 Haitians were picked up by U.S. ships, the second highest one day total, since the military coup in 1991. close
