Members of the bipartisan group of senators attempting to find a compromise to the health care reform legislation, spoke with reporters following the release of Majority Leader Senator George Mitchell D-Maine compromise legislation. The senators voiced their opposition to a number of the plan’s provisions including the attempts to regulate the health care industry. Senator Mitchell’s bill aims to cover 95 percent of Americans by the year 2000. If the goal for coverage is not met, employers and employees would split the cost of coverage. The bill also provides for coverage of poor families, pregnant women, children and others. House Majority Leader Richard Gephardt is working on compromise health care legislation in the U.S. House. Debate on health care reform is expected to begin as early as next week. close
