President Clinton presented a statement on the House of Representatives' passage of the Crime Bill, stating “The vote in the House of Representatives tonight is a great victory for all law-abiding Americans.” He praised the bipartisan vote, and particularly thanked the Republicans who voted for passage. He reminded listeners that the fight is far from over. "We now move to the Senate, which must pass the bill this week." He called upon senators from both parties to work together as both parties did in the House. Questions after the statement covered whether the President will change the way he works and reach more quickly out to Republicans; what lessons he learned from the crime legislation exchange; and whether he will support the mainstream version now in the Senate. close
